W.alter:

There are so many howtos cropping up, each with individual tips and customization examples for Knoppix remasters, that it seems good to have a place to put generic tips, no matter how you go about remastering, be it using scripts, completely by hand, or via a HD install, Morphix, etc... Please add your tips and example "hacks" here.

Remastering Process Tips
Saving space while running chroot environment
* If you booted from CD, even on a HD install (example: Pivot Install) instead of copying the original CD and KNOPPIX directory to the HD, you can use them directly from their mount points.
* Another alternative is to mount an ISO image of the original CD as a loop device and mount the KNOPPIX image as a cloop device. You will save close to 2 GB of space. Script to mount from an ISO image:

#!/bin/bash
# Assumes that the current directory is the working space
# original.iso is an image of the CD we will be using as master
mount -t iso9660 original.iso ./oldcd -o ro,loop
# initialize the compressed loop device
losetup /dev/cloop1 ./oldcd/KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX
mount -t iso9660 /dev/cloop1 ./KNOPPIX -o ro,loop

Installing software and clearing up space with Apt
Get the best apt mirror
* Get apt-spy and use it to modify the sources.list file with the best mirrors for your particular region. This will speed up the downloading. Backup the original sources.list just in case.
* Another technique is to modify sources.list. Replace the string .de. in the FTP addresses (ftp.de.debian.org) with the code corresponding to your country. Examples: USA -> .us. (ftp.us.debian.org), Brazil -> .br. (ftp.br.debian.org). Check the Debian site for debian.org mirrors in your country.
* Remember to uncomment the Linuxtag FTP addresses to get the latest and greatest from Knoppix

Update all packages
* Use apt-get update to get the lists with the latest releases and patches. Do not update a package if you don't need to, it may lead to the use of additional disk space (precious commodity when you want to keep everything below 700 MB) and you may brake something else without knowing. Abuse the -s option to simulate the installation.
* Before doing the update, I modified my default releases to testing, that means that the software I'll be using will have a good balance of stability and features. Knoppix uses unstable by default, which is too risky for my personal taste.

Configuring locale settings
* Get [apt-get install] locale and configure it with the locales you are going to use. It will save lots of space when downloading applications with plenty of locale modules and localized manual pages.

*NOTE: Knoppix 4.0.2 (possibly other 4.x and 3.9 versions too) already has the 'locales' package installed. In this case it is easy to get the right locale set. Just run the command dpkg-reconfigure locales as the root user. This will allow you to select/de-select the locales that you will use, and choose a default locale for your system.

Character based package management with Aptitude
* I use aptitude to get/remove applications, it is character based so it works with init 2. As you mark packages for install/update/removal, it will tell you how much disk space you will save/use, try to solve depencies problems and give you plenty control to fix them manually when possible.
* After you are done, aptitude may leave some files behind. Here's a clean up script I use:

# !/bin/bash
# Clean package files generated by aptitude
rm /var/log/aptitude
rm /var/lib/apt/lists/*debian*
rm /var/lib/apt/lists/*knoppix*

Cleaning up space when removing apps
* When removing/purging applications, they may leave behind non-empty directories. Usually this is announced by aptitude, apt-get or any other installation utilty. Make sure to check the messages and manually remove those directories.

Removing a bunch of internationalization support to save space using Apt and grep
The following command returns a listing of all packages installed.

dpkg-query -l | less

While that command is useful, you can use grep to sort out which packages you to remove. The following command shows me packages that kde uses for internationalization support and strips off all the other extraneous information.

dpkg-query -l | grep i18n | grep kde | cut -d' ' -f3

I can feed this to apt-get so that it will remove those packages.

apt-get remove `dpkg-query -l | grep i18n | grep kde | cut -d' ' -f3`

You could remove openoffice and other German tools as follows:

apt-get remove openoffice-de-en manpages-de trans-de-en

Other packages commonly removed for custom images
Remove enigma and bacula as follows:

apt-get remove enigma bacula-common

Remove emacs as follows:

apt-get remove emacs21 emacs21-bin-common emacs21-common emacsen-common gettext-el zile

German Language user package

apt-get remove user-de

This results in a reasonable base to begin updating and adding packages to this system. First configure /etc/apt/sources.list and add the appropriate entries for a local Debian mirror.

What to do when behind a proxy
If you are behind a proxy and must authenticate against it to access the internet, then use the following command.
export http_proxy="http://username:passwd@yourproxy.company.com:portnumber/"

Useful packages for install packages and cleaning up locales
Add three useful packages:

apt-get install localepurge aptitude

Localepurge will only keep the locales that are marked. This means that it will free up additional space. After running through the configuration removing locales you don't need, you must run it from the command line:

localepurge

NOTE: localepurge may not be able to be installed by the apt-get install command (ie. you get the error "Couldn't find package localepurge" when you try to install), but you can install it with the aptitude interface.

Aptitude is a console menu front end to apt and dpkg.

Package updates within the GUI
apt-get install synaptic

Synaptic is a graphical front end to apt & dpkg.

Boot
Boot logo
The boot logo: The boot image is logo.16 and is a lss16 format image. To start make a 16 color image (in Gimp, create the image and use the Image -> Mode -> Indexed menu to export to 16 colors) you want to use. The image must be 640x480 or less. 640x400 leaves room at the bottom for the boot prompt. Save the image as a bmp format (in gimp you can save as ppm as well to skip the first conversion). Then run:

bmptoppm mylogo.bmp > logo16.ppm
ppmtolss16 < logo16.ppm > logo.16

When using the script method Knoppix Remastering with Menu Based Scripts, the logo file will be located somewhere like:

<path-to-remaster dir>KNOPPIX.build/Knoppix.Master/KNOPPIX-CUSTOM/boot/isolinux

There are also some files in KNOPPIX.build/Knoppix.Master/KNOPPIX-CUSTOM/KNOPPIX/images that might be interesting to look at.

Grub on CD, graphic menu
here are my notes on using grub instead of isolinux as the cd bootloader, and
tweaking the graphic boot menu (ala morphix and kanotix)

Accelerated Knoppix
I put together some notes on using accelerated knoppix to speed up boot and apps when remastering.

Desktop
To keep certain desktop settings persistent
I must now mention the file /etc/X11/Xsession.d/45xsession. This script controls how knoppix behaves & how knoppix creates the knoppix user's home directory.

Edit the file /etc/X11/Xsession.d/45xsession and look for the ninth occurence of rsync in the script and it is found at or around line 128:

126: if [ -z "$DONTCHANGE" ]; then
127: # No persistent homedir, copy everything
128: rsync -Ha --ignore-existing /etc/skel/{.kde*,Desktop} $HOME/ 2>/dev/null
129: [ "$USER" = "knoppix" ] && rsync -Ha --ignore-existing /usr/share/knoppix/profile/{.kde*,Desktop} $HOME/ 2>/dev/null

It is line 128 which populates the /home/knoppix folder. So in line 128, I delete from & including the { to the }. It is changed as follows.

126: if [ -z "$DONTCHANGE" ]; then
127: # No persistent homedir, copy everything
128: rsync -Ha --ignore-existing /etc/skel/ $HOME/ 2>/dev/null
129: [ "$USER" = "knoppix" ] && rsync -Ha --ignore-existing /usr/share/knoppix/profile/{.kde*,Desktop} $HOME/ 2>/dev/null

Make the change and save the 45xsession file.

Making a permanent desktop background change
Replace the <path to chroot env>/KNOPPIX.build/Knoppix.Master/KNOPPIX-CUSTOM/KNOPPIX/background.png from outside the chroot env to be the one you would like for the default desktop background.

Changing the desktop splash screen
Replace /usr/share/apps/ksplash/Themes/Default/splash_top.png

(400X248 pixel is the normal size of this image)

Adding Icons
Plonk them into /etc/skel/Desktop or if you are working under a knoppix home directory, plonk them there. Under any KDE or Gnome system you can find examples of the format for these files.

Startup
Adding init scripts that should run
Say you need to make sure certain services are started up at boot time. You would think you could put them in the proper /etc/rc<num>.d/ directory and they would just work eh. Ha. Ha. To get something to always start, you have to actually modify the /etc/init.d/knoppix-autoconfig script and have it start the services. The init scripts will always be in the /etc/init.d/ directory, but they won't stay in the /etc/rc<num>.d directories, even if you put them there. It will make you sad.

For example, to add a custom VPN script and turn on some of the NFS client utils, one could add some lines after the automounty stuff:

# Start automounter now
/etc/init.d/autofs start >/dev/null && echo "${GREEN}Automounter started for: ${MAGENTA}${AUTOMOUNTS}${GREEN}.${NORMAL}"
fi
#
# CUSTOM SCRIPTY STUFF
#
if [ -f /etc/init.d/portmap ] ; then
/etc/init.d/portmap start >/dev/null && \
echo "${GREEN}Portmapper started"
fi
if [ -f /etc/init.d/nfs-common ] ; then
/etc/init.d/nfs-common start >/dev/null && \
echo "${GREEN}NFS Common Services started"
fi
# Start VPN
if [ -f /etc/init.d/vtundvpn ] ; then
/etc/init.d/vtundvpn start >/dev/null && \
echo "${GREEN}VPN started"
fi
#
# END CUSTOM SCRIPTY STUFF
#

Making the CD fallback default language not German
Again, you want to modify the /etc/init.d/knoppix-autoconfig script and find where the LANGUAGE variable gets set. Change it to the desired default language (for example, from 'de' to 'us'.)

Voraussetzungen:
* insgesamt mindestens 1 Gigabyte freien RAM+Swap (z. B. 256 Megabyte RAM und 750 Megabyte Swap-Bereich VERFÜGBAR)
(außer du benutzt andere Kompressions-Werkzeuge - siehe Ende der Seite)
* 3 Gigabyte freien Speicher auf der Festplatte

Anleitung:
Diese Anleitung ist zumindest gültig für Knoppix 3.9.

* Booten von der Knoppix-CD
* Konfigurieren deiner Internet-Verbindung (die brauchen wir später noch)
* Öffne eine Shell (KDE-Menü->Knoppix->Root Shell) - alle weiter unten stehenden Befehle sollten von der Root-Shell aufgerufen werden
* Erzeuge 2 Verzeichnisse auf der Partition, eines für deine neue Master-CD und eines für die Sourcen. Außerdem solltest du kontrollieren, dass die Partition schreib- und lesbar gemountet ist.
* mkdir /mnt/hda4/knxmaster/KNOPPIX
* cp /cdrom/index.html /mnt/hda4/knxmaster/
* cp -p /cdrom/cdrom.ico /cdrom/autorun.* /mnt/hda4/knxmaster/
* cp -rp /cdrom/boot/ /mnt/hda4/knxmaster/
* und jetzt kopiere alles von /cdrom/KNOPPIX/* nach /mnt/hda4/knxmaster/KNOPPIX/ außer die etwa 700 MB große KNOPPIX-Datei.

* Jetzt kannst du das kopierte KNOPPIX-Verzeichnis zum Wurzelverzeichnis machen: chroot /mnt/hda4/knxsource/KNOPPIX

Neu - Ich habe eine ganze Ladung an /dev/null permission denied Fehlermeldungen bekommen. Update: Gefixt!
mount /dev/hda12 /mnt/hda12
Und das hat sich geändert:
mount /dev/hda12 on /mnt/hda12 type ext3 (rw)

Wenn der obige Befehl nicht geht probiere:
mount -t ext3 -o rw /dev/hda12 /mnt/hda12

* Wenn man smbd-Unterstützung haben will, sollte man auch die Arbeitsgruppe in der Datei smb.conf editieren: (MSHOME unter XP Home und WORKGROUP unter Windows 9x bzw. MSHEIMNETZ und ARBEITSGRUPPE in den deutschen Windows-Versionen)
* überprüfe, ob die Internet-Verbindung funktioniert: ping google.com
* Und jetzt kann man endlich Änderungen durchführen. Wenn man Programme hinzufügen will, dann muß man eventuell andere entfernen, um Platz zu machen. Mit apt-get remove "program" kann man das Programm entfernen.
* Änderungen durchführen... Benutzereinstellungen sind in /etc/skel, ggf. muss man auch noch in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/45xsession das rsync-Kommando anpassen (der Punkt ist, dass der Default-User 'knoppix' nicht per adduser(1) angelegt wird und so einfach eine Kopie von /etc/skel bekommt, sondern in 45xsession explizit nur ein Ausschnitt von /etc/skel nach /home/knoppix kopiert wird.)
* ...
* Unmounte /proc - sehr wichtig! umount /proc
* Drücke CTRL+D um die chroot-Umgebung zu verlassen.

Notizen :

* Wir sind fertig mit den Änderungen und bereit zum Brennen!
* Als erstes sollte man etwas aufräumen: lösche .bash_history, Dateien in /tmp, Pakete unter /var/cache/apt/archives etc.
* rm -rf /mnt/hda4/knxsource/KNOPPIX/.rr_moved
* Jetzt erzeugt man eine große KNOPPIX-Datei mit einem komprimierten cloop-ISO9660-Dateisystem drinnen: mkisofs -R -U -V "KNOPPIX.net filesystem" --publisher "KNOPPIX www.knoppix.net" -hide-rr-moved -cache-inodes -no-bak -pad /mnt/hda4/knxsource/KNOPPIX | nice -5 /usr/bin/create_compressed_fs - 65536 > /mnt/hda4/knxmaster/KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX

* wenn alles glatt verlaufen ist dann können wir mit dem engültigen CD-ROM-Image weitermachen:
* cd /mnt/hda4/knxmaster
* rm -f KNOPPIX/md5sums; find -type f -not -name md5sums -not -name boot.cat -exec md5sum {} \; >> KNOPPIX/md5sums (das aktualisiert die md5-Hashes der Dateien im Image, um später die Integrität prüfen zu können)
* für Knoppix <= 3.3: mkisofs -pad -l -r -J -v -V "KNOPPIX" --publisher "KNOPPIX www.knoppix.net" -b KNOPPIX/boot.img -c KNOPPIX/boot.cat -hide-rr-moved -o /some/where/knoppix.iso /mnt/hda4/knxmaster (ersetze /some/where/ mit dem Ort wo das fertige Image abgelegt werden soll.)
* für Knoppix >= 3.4 (isolinux): mkisofs -pad -l -r -J -v -V "KNOPPIX" --publisher "KNOPPIX www.knoppix.net" -b boot/isolinux/isolinux.bin -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -c KNOPPIX/boot.cat -hide-rr-moved -o /some/where/knoppix.iso /mnt/hda4/knxmaster (ersetze /some/where/ mit dem Ort, wo das fertige Image abgelegt werden soll.)
* Fertig!
Each user must determine its usefulness and reliability.
Goals Envisioned
Uses: Provide a very low cost, portable, secure computer environment.

Inexpensive computing with simple startup is suitable for many users.
High security can be obtained by haveing data only in memory, and save to
CDRW only in encripted form. No unencrypted data is ever on a storage media.
A random password can be kept on an USB stick and stored seperately for added
protection.

Uses Described
Students, library patron, low use public, high security, legacy preservation, robotics are good matches.

The advantage of this use of KNOPPIX is to provide a low cost, portable,
secure computer environment. Students, library patrons, high security,
demonstration and development projects, or public computer kiosk may
be a good match. KNOPPIX with burn_home may offer an interesting solution
to the legacy preservation in computing. It may also be excellent for
robotics since the energy use can be minimal with no hard drive and the
CD drive that only runs when needed.

A few CDRW disks and a floppy is all a student needs. Such a user may
lose or have stolen more expensive media.

Slow shutdown speed and limited installation of new software are among
many limitations.

Design Philosophy
The operating system, personal data, and computer are seperated from each other.

The computer, the operating system and data should be
kept independent of each other. This can increases secruity,
reliability, portability, and ease of use.

A new live CD up date version may be used giving an upgraded
operating system. Simply burn the new iso and put it in the
CD tray and boot. Unless there are major KNOPPIX
changes, the data from the RWCD will continue to work.

Target Computer
500 MB memory, floppy, DVD or CD, second CDRW -- no hard drive needed.

The envisioned target computer for Burn Home has

: * one floppy
: * CD drive
: * Second CDRW drive – may be on USB -- these scripts assume cdrom1 dev=1,0,0 (enter cdrecord –scanbus to find your dev=?,?,?)
: * 500 MB memory – less may work but may be limiting
: * sound
: * internet
: * printer

Setup Instructions
KNOPPIX is booted from CD, the KDE desktop customized and several files copied.

1. Start (boot from) the KNOPPIX CD

2. Make a boot floppy from the KNOPPIX CD
see Boot FloppyHowTo

3. Edit the file syslinux.cfg on the boot floppy.
After the first BOOT_IMAGE=knoppix add --> myconfig=/mnt/cdrom1
and any other cheat codes you wish --> lang=us
See Note(3)

4. Click Home --> Desktop
Paste or copy the script file burn_home to this directory
Right click burn_home --> Properties --> Permissions -->
check all of the Exec boxes.
See Note(4)

5. Adjust your KDE desktop features like background, clock font, icon size,
scanner, printer, and internet. Put in a new empty floppy and:
K --> KNOPPIX -->Configure --> Save Knoppix Configuration --> OK --> floppy
Now copy configs.tbz and knoppix.sh from the floppy to the
/home/knoppix directory.
See Note(5)

6. Place a CDRW disk to be overwritten or a blank CDR disk, and click
on burn_home on the desktop. Click all of the OK boxes for the usual
operation with a CDRW. Wait for the message saying the burn was good.
Remove the CD.
See Note(6)

7. Normal operation: Reboot with the boot floppy, the KNOPPIX CD in the
first CD tray, and the burn_home disk in the second CD tray.

8. Rotate through at least 3 or as many CDWR as you wish
so that you will always have backup copies to go back to.
At any time you may start a new set of disks.
Occasionally, I burn a CDR to keep as a perminent record,
when I have reached a point in programming that I want to
keep for reference.

Adding Programs
With special methods new programs can be added to the second CDRW.

You cannot, of course, add program files to the root directories
since these are on the KNOPPIX CD and are therefore read only.

But by adding to the path of the console, the path is extended to
the directory /ramdisk/home/knoppix/dist/bin
Some programs can be modified to install in this directory.

Kano has written excellent scripts to install some programs to
/ramdisk/home/knoppix/dist/bin on the live CD.
Try mplayer and realpalyer. Once installed and saved to CD
with burn_home the programs a available on boot up -- thus
essentially making a new 2 CD KNOPPIX version.
- live-installer on KNOPPIX 3.4

Although this is a simple add on, integration into KNOPPIX would be welcomed.

Englische Version: Cheat Codes
----

Optionen
;lang=bg|ch|cn|cs|da|de|dk|es|fr|it|nl|pl|ru|sk|tr|tw|uk|us: einstellen des Keyboard-Layouts und der Sprache.
;desktop=fluxbox|gnome|icewm|kde|larswm|twm|wmaker|xfce: Windowmanager auswählen (Default ist KDE).
;screen=1280x1024: Benutzerdefinierte Auflösung für X einstellen.
;xvrefresh=60:60 Hz vertikale Wiederholrate für X einstellen.
;xserver=XFree86|XF86_SVGA: Benutzerdefinierten X-Server verwenden.
;xmodule=ati|fbdev|savage|s3: Benutzerdefinierte XFree4-Module verwenden.
;noapic noagp noapm nodma nomce nofirewire nopcmcia noscsi noswap nousb: Ausschalten einiger automatischer Hardware-Suchfunktionen.

Kernel
;knoppix: Standard Kernel.
;knoppix-txt: kein Framebuffer beim Start verwenden.
;fb1024x768: Fix definieren Framebuffer verwenden (1024 x 768).
;fb800x600: Fix definieren Framebuffer verwenden (800 x 600).

Introduction
German Version: Cheat Codes Deutsch / French Version: Cheat Codes French /
Versión español: Cheat Codes Spanish
----
Cheatcodes are used to pass options to KNOPPIX to help with getting it working on difficult hardware. You type them into the boot screen and press enter/return. The format is "kernel option option option ...". Usually "knoppix" is the right selection for the "kernel". You can type more than one cheatcode before pressing enter. Also note that some options can take on values.

Example: "knoppix xvrefresh=60 noscsi floppyconfig"

----

Options
;lang=bg|be|ch|cn|cs|cz|da|de|dk|es|fi|fr|ie|it|ja|nl|pl|ru|sk|tr|tw|uk|us : specify language/keyboard

: You can click on http://www.w3.org/WAI/ER/IG/ert/iso639.htm to see the two-letters code meanings.

: For example, typing knoppix lang=us you change the keyboard/language to US english.

: If you don't change the keyboard, in the default DE-bootimage, Knoppix boots with the german keyboard layout (i.e. '=' letter is located at Shift-0 at this keyboard). Print the german keyboard layout for your reference.
;keyboard=us : specify only console keyboard
;xkeyboard=us : specify X keyboard
;atapicd :Do NOT use SCSI-Emulation for IDE CD-Roms - Knoppix V3.4 and later
;desktop=fluxbox|icewm|larswm|twm|wmaker|xfce : Use specified WM instead of KDE
;screen=1280x1024 :Use specified Screen resolution for X
;xvrefresh=60 or vsync=60 : Use 60 Hz vertical refresh rate for X
;xhrefresh=80 or hsync=80 : Use 80 kHz horizontal refresh rate for X
;xserver=XFree86|XF86_SVGA : Use specified X-Server
;xmodule=ati|radeon|fbdev|vesa|savage|s3|nv|i810|mga|svga|tseng : Use specified XFree4-Module
;wheelmouse : The mouse is a wheelmouse - not needed since 2003-04-15
;nowheelmouse : Regular PS/2 mouse - 2003-04-15 and after.
;0 : Runlevel 0, Shutdown
;1 : Runlevel 1, Textmode, single user
;2 : Runlevel 2, Textmode only
;3 : Runlevel 3, Textmode only
;4 : Runlevel 4, Textmode only
;5 : Runlevel 5, Graphics mode, default
;6 : Runlevel 6, Reboot
;myconfig=scan or floppyconfig or floppyconf (in recent versions) : Run knoppix.sh from a floppy. The "floppyconfig" option allows you to reconfigure the system after autoconfig, or install your own config files, by mounting a floppy disk and running a bourne shell script called knoppix.sh from the root directory on this floppy. There is a GUI to create such a configuration floppy disk calles "saveconfig" (also located in the KDE menu under "KNOPPIX", but experts also know how to do this by creating their own shellscripts. The configuration with network and graphics setup are stored in configs.tbz. A file called knoppix.sh, if located in the toplevel KNOPPIX directory on CD, will also be executed at startup. This makes it easier to create customized versions without having to change anything on the compressed filesystem KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX.
;myconf=/dev/sda1  :Run "knoppix.sh" from a partition - Knoppix V3.4
;myconf=scan (or config=scan) :Try to find "knoppix.sh" automatically - Knoppix V3.4
;noapic noagp noapm nodma nomce nofirewire nopcmcia noscsi noswap nousb nosmp noaudio : Skip parts of Hardware-detection, In case of a failing hardware autodetection, try booting with any of the "no-" options as shown in the table above, like in knoppix noagp noapm noapic nodma nopcmcia noscsi nousb to skip some critical parts of the autodetection system. The "noswap" option is useful for a forensic analysis without touching existing swap partitions.
;nofstab : By default Knoppix will look/scan the HDs to see if it contains partitions. If the HDs do have partitions, Knoppix will automatically build a '/etc/fstab' file and fill-in the appropriate partition entries and will also create the '/mnt/hdxx' mount points. The 'nofstab' cheat code prevents this look/scan and prevents the generation of the /etc/fstab and its mount points.
;nohwsetup : Skip hardware detection (does not run hwsetup)
;pci=irqmask=0x0e98 : Notebook if PS/2 mouse doesn't work, Try "knoppix pci=irqmask=0x0e98" if (you have a notebook and) your PS/2 mouse doesn't work. (Possibly caused by a BIOS-flaw on your board.)
;ide2=0x180 nopcmia : boot from PCMCIA-CD (Transmeta notebooks)
;pci=biosirq : Will force the use of the BIOS assigned Interrupt ReQuests on the PCI bus. Possible cure for non-functioning hardware. Very handy for unruly IRQ conflicts. Look at dmesg and cat /proc/pci to find out if you have any such troubles..
;mem=128M : Specify Memory size in MByte, Some Boards apparently don't pass the proper memory size to the linux-kernel. It may cause the message "Panic cannot mount root file system" and the system hangs. Use "knoppix mem=128M" to solve that problem if your system has 128MByte memory for example (caution you MUST use a capital "M" here). Stuff like mem=16320K also works.
;noeject : Do NOT eject CD after halt
;noprompt : Its especially useful in combination with noeject. With noprompt, Knopix won't eject the CD and ask for a keypress. It was a much asked feature some time ago. Version 2003-09-22 and later.
;nodhcp : skip dhcp/network broadcast detection
;splash : It shows the upper half of the KDE splash-screen, while booting up. You can press Esc anytime to see all the messages. Ever wanted to hide those cryptic messages? Version 2003-09-22 and later.
* New in 3.4: Animations (see for yourself) and the ability to press any key.
;modules-disk : This cheatcode allows you to insert a floppy disk with additional modules, for example USB-stick or similar. Yes, its also possible with "expert", but there you loose the automatic configuration afterwards. Version 2003-09-22 and later.
;toram : Copy CD to RAM and run from there. Version 2003-09-05 and later.
;tohd : You can now do a "poor mans install" on vfat and ext2-Partitions with, knoppix tohd=/dev/hda1 Version 2003-09-22 and later.
;fromhd : With this cheatcode the CD-Roms are ignored, so you can finally boot your "poor mans install" with just the original cdrom. Version 2003-09-05 and later. note - Cheatcode "toram" and "fromhd" work now together. Usage fromhd=/dev/hda1.
;bootfrom=/dev/hda1 : Access Image then boot from previously copied CD-Image (enables booting from NTFS / ReiserFS) - Knoppix V3.4
;bootfrom=/dev/hda1/KNX.iso : Access image, boot from ISO-Image. - Knoppix V3.4

: NOTE: bootfrom needs access to a running Knoppix-System with the same Kernel as the Bootkernel, before it is able to mount the partition / ISO-Image. This should allow a poor mans install from NTFS-Partitions and makes it also possible to boot an ISO-Image directly. You can also use wildcards in the ISO-Filename, but it must be unique. So: If you have just one KNOPPIX.iso on /dev/hda1 you can access it as: bootfrom=/dev/hda1/K*.iso, but if there are several, you need to make clear, which one you want. (Feature added by Fabian Franz.)

: CAUTION: The 2.4 kernel that is in the KNOPPIX 3.4 CD does not support the ext3 filesystem so make sure that the ISO is stored in an ext2 filesystem.
;gmt|utc : Hardware clock is set to GMT/UTC
;tz=Europe/Berlin : Hardware clock is set to timezone Europe/Berlin

;vga=ext : 50-line TEXT mode
;dma : enable DMA for all IDE drives
;home=scan :Set home directory. 'scan' will search for knoppix.img in the root of all partitions. To create a home directory, go K-menu -> Knoppix -> Configure -> Create persistant home directory. Be carefull when creating the home-dir, Do NOT use the entire partition unless you know what you are doing. Other options could be, home=/dev/hda1/knoppix.img home=/mnt/hda1/knoppix.img . If you are using a USB memory stick type home=/dev/sda1/knoppix.img but home=scan will probably do.
;blind :Start Braille-Terminal (no X)
;brltty=type,port,table :Parameters for Braille device.
For more information on brltty parameters see http://mielke.cc/brltty/guidelines.html
;alsa :Autoconfigure alsa for an pci-soundcard
;alsa=es1938 :Configure alsa for the snd-es1938.o-module pci-soundcard
;testcd : Check CD data integrity, If your KNOPPIX CD makes strange noises during boot, or you see frequent errors like "cloop read error", or programs on your KDE desktop keep crashing randomly, then your CD image is probably defective or incomplete, or your CD-burner created a defective CD due to wrong writing speed or bad media. This is the most common error reported. Please boot with "knoppix testcd" to check if the CD is OK, and/or even better, verify the MD5 checksums that are present on the mirrors before writing the CD. Also, please read the KNOPPIX-FAQ.

: CAUTION: testcd can take a long time and the screen saver often starts while the testcd check is running. Hit SHIFT or CTRL to turn off the screen saver and continue, there is likely no need to reset the system or burn another CD at this point.
;pnpbios=off : No PnP Bios initialization
;acpi=off : Disable ACPI Bios completely
;pci=bios : Workaround for bad PCI controllers
;knoppix_dir=KNOPPIX : Directory to search for on the CD.
;knoppix_name=KNOPPIX : Cloop-File to search for on the CD.
;-b : "Emergency Mode", a quick-n-dirty boot, almost no HW detection, only 1 VT; hit enter at root-password prompt and start typing commands. Good if you just need to fdisk IDE devices, activate a different partition for booting, DD stuff, and you are planning on rebooting Real Fast after you're done. You can actually Alt-SysRQ-B safely ie. immediate reboot w/o worrying about shutting down nicely or anything, because nothing is mounted r/w at ALL - not even swap. Also works on other Linux distros.
Kernels
For a complete listing of the kernels and kernel labels, see the isolinux.cfg file on the CD.

;knoppix or linux : Default settings
# cat /proc/cmdline
ramdisk_size=100000 init=/etc/init lang=us apm=power-off vga=791
initrd=minirt.gz nomce quiet BOOT_IMAGE=knoppix BOOT_IMAGE=linux
;knoppix26 or linux26 : Boot the 2.6 kernel for use with the new Knoppix 3.4 and 3.4 c't Edition.
;knoppix-txt : No framebuffer at startup
# cat /proc/cmdline
xmodule=vesa initrd=minirt.gz BOOT_IMAGE=knoppix BOOT_IMAGE=linux
;expert : Interactive setup for experts, The "expert" mode provides a very simple and not yet well tested interface to loading additional Kernel modules from floppy disks (ext2 or vfat), plus interactive configuration of mouse/keyboard/soundcard/xserver. "expert" mode supports the same boot options as "knoppix".
# cat /proc/cmdline
ramdisk_size=100000 init=/etc/init lang=us apm=power-off vga=791
initrd=minirt.gz nomce BOOT_IMAGE=expert BOOT_IMAGE=linux
;expert26 : The same as above only with 2.6 kernel - Knoppix V3.4
;memtest : Run memtest86 instead of Linux - Knoppix V3.4
;debug : Pauses at various stages in the boot and shutdown processes. Type 'exit' to move on to the next stage.
# cat /proc/cmdline
ramdisk_size=100000 init=/etc/init lang=us apm=power-off
vga=normal initrd=minirt.gz debug BOOT_IMAGE=debug BOOT_IMAGE=linux
;userdef : useful kernel alias if you use knoppix-customize. Type 'man knoppix-customize' for more information. Very experimental.
----

Tips&Tricks
If you are unable to boot Knoppix (i.e. the screen goes blank, you see a kernel panic message, the screen flickers, you are dropped into a minimal shell, Knoppix simply freezes while booting, etc.), try these boot commands in order:
* boot: knoppix vga=0
* boot: knoppix acpi=off pnpbios=off noapic noapm Helpful for laptops
* boot: knoppix vga=0 debug -b 3 Using this boot command will cause Knoppix to pause at various stages in the boot process. Just type 'exit' at each shell prompt to move on to the next stage. You will know that you are at the final stage when typing 'exit' does not do anything. If you get that far, type 'init 5' to go into graphics mode.
* boot: failsafe debug -b 3 That will do the same as the previous boot command, except turn off most of the hardware detection.
If you still have issues, please post in the Hardware & Booting forum, tell us which of the above boot commands you tried, and how far in the boot process you were able to get.

Information for further troubleshooting:

Most of the boot options are parsed by different programs and scripts during the booting process, roughly in this order:

* the isolinux bootloader
* the linux kernel
* /linuxrc , which can be found in /cdrom/boot/isolinux/miniroot.gz -> linuxrc
* /etc/init.d/knoppix-autoconfig
* /etc/init.d/xsession
* /usr/sbin/mkxf86config
* /etc/init.d/knoppix-halt
* /etc/init.d/knoppix-reboot

For more information on passing boot parameters to the kernel, see 'man boot' and 'man bootparam'.
* Beginners Live CD for linux newbie
* Cluster Live CD clustering/parallel computing
You do have to use persistent home or hdd-install in order to fold@home with PXE-booted clients. This is a technical issue involving the dynamic ramdisk which prevents NFS or Samba from being able to mount the live CD filesystem unless there is a permanent, fixed-size medium for data. I did not include instructions but it is very simple. I suggest checking out the Overclockix Support Forum where I'll be happy to help you get started.
