Hello! I'm new at Linux, but I'm a frequent contributor to [http://www.wikipdia.org Wikipedia]. I hope that i could make this Wiki better through formatting, simpler language, explanations, and maybe translations to Swedish, if I have a LOT of spare time. =)

I installed [http://www.damnsmalllinux.org Damn small linux] some months ago, and i liked the idea to use an OS which simply is not MS Windows. Later i switched to Knoppix ver 5, and it was much better! I think im going too keep Knoppix, as its both a reliable LiveCD (although i have copied the KNOPPIX file to Harddisk) and configurable with it's KNOPPIX.IMG.

Note: the wiki is in a state of flux as described at [[Wiki_Upgrade_Info]]. Please see that page on how you can help get all the pages back.

Currently, the theme and plan of the wiki will take a novice user from the beginning all the way to advanced topics. Sections of the wiki will show you how to obtain, verify, burn the ISO file to a CD-R and finally how to boot Knoppix. Other sections will help a user become aquainted with the GUI interface that Knoppix provides. Moreover, some of the power of the command prompt and shell scripting languages will be provided. These topics may help you prepare for remastering Knoppix to meet your needs. Though Knoppix was designed to run from a CD-ROM drive, hard drive installations are possible.

There's a [[Quick Index]] page so that you can find pages easier while the wiki is in transition. The following two sections may help you find what you are looking for right away. The final sections on this page are conversion status pages. However, they are full of useful information now even though the conversion team has not had the chance to organize the content. Currently, the theme and plan of the wiki will take a novice user from the beginning all the way to advanced topics. Sections of the wiki will show you how to obtain, verify, burn the ISO file to a CD-R and finally how to boot Knoppix. Other sections will help a user become aquainted with the GUI interface that Knoppix provides. Moreover, some of the power of the command prompt and shell scripting languages will be provided. These topics may help you prepare for remastering Knoppix to meet your needs. Though Knoppix was designed to run from a CD-ROM drive, hard drive installations are possible.

Currently, the theme and plan of the wiki will take a novice user from the beginning all the way to advanced topics. Sections of the wiki will show you how to obtain, verify, burn the ISO file to a CD-R and finally how to boot Knoppix. Other sections will help a user become aquainted with the GUI interface that Knoppix provides. Moreover, some of the power of the command prompt and shell scripting languages will be provided. These topics may help you prepare for remastering Knoppix to meet your needs. Though Knoppix was designed to run from a CD-ROM drive, hard drive installations are possible.

Por ahora que tienes kpackage y apt-get, yo te aconsejo
apt-get para instalar kernel, programas cualquiera,
librerias o lo que sea.

1) Primero actualizas la base de datos de paquetes
disponibles:

apt-get update

2) Buscas
apt-cache search kernel

te dará una lista enorme de todos los paquetes que
mencionan la palabra kernel, pero si lo filtras con
grep, la lista será menor

3) Filtras
apt-cache search kernel | grep image

eso te dará una lista de los que además tienen la
palabra image

4) haces foco
Estos son los que deberían interesarte:

Installation of older Knoppix to HDD

- Described installation was tried on Dannix (CZ Knoppix) from 3.7. 2003

- Boot Knoppix CD

- Run Root Console

- Use "fdisk" to create two primary partitions. Larger for OS (for example /dev/hda1
as type 83 Linux) and smaller for swap (for example /dev/hda2 as type 82 Linux Swap).
Don't forget to set up bootable attribute "a" to /dev/hda1.

- Run "mke2fs /dev/hda1" for initialization of the device

- Run "mkdir /mnt/hda1" for creation of the mounting point

- Run "mount -t ext2 /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1" for mounting of the device

- Run "cp -a /KNOPPIX/* /mnt/hda1" to copy of needed files

- Run "cp /etc/fstab /mnt/hda1/etc" to copy "fstab" file to new system location

- Run "chroot /mnt/hda1" for moving to interactive shell

- Modify "/etc/fstab" file:

- Run "mkswap /dev/hda2" for setting up /dev/hda2 as swap device

- Reboot Knoppix

- The Knoppix system is now installed on your HDD and you can run it as root user.

- If you want to run Knoppix OS as a different user (not root), create it (run "adduser").

- Modify "/etc/init.d/*xsession" file. Find "USER=root" and change it to "USER=%UserName%" (aproximately 5th line), where %UserName% is the user name of created user.

- Run "visudo" to modify "/etc/sudoers". There you have to find and change "knoppix" to "USER=%UserName%", where %UserName% is the user name of created user. This change will allow you to run Root Console.

- Reboot Knoppix.

Knoppix 5.0.1 boots rather nicely from a USB key. It's getting easier to get it working, as the USB bugs from the previous versions have been fixed.

This is a "recipe" for creating a Knoppix bootable USB key. It was originally posted to the forums: http://knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=25402

==Ingredients==

* Knoppix 5.0.1 CD

It must be the CD. The DVD is much too large.

* 1GB USB key

I recommend 1GB. Smaller sizes won't hold the entire CD. Larger sizes may have trouble booting on older BIOS's (see below about USB-ZIP).

Back up all data on your USB key first, because we will be erasing and reformatting it!

==Instructions==

* Boot Knoppix 5.0.1 from CD and make sure that it works.

As soon as the title screen of Knoppix appears (the cheatcode entry screen), put in the USB key.

Do this before Knoppix starts to load, so that your USB key is sure to be found by Knoppix's autodetection.

Do not use the "toram" cheatcode when booting Knoppix. The RAM copy of the CD omits the /boot directory, but we require this directory, so we can't use the RAM copy.

* Once Knoppix is up and running, open a root shell (from the penguin icon).

Now, we need to find the drive letter of your USB key. It will be something like /dev/sda, /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc, and so on. Be very careful and make absolutely sure you have the drive letter correct, because you will be erasing the USB key, and you don't want to erase your hard drive by mistake!

Examples of possible commands to try:

dmesg | grep -i scsi

dmesg | grep -i usb

cat /proc/partitions

Look at the sizes of the various drives you see here. Find your USB key, and do not get it confused with your hard drive! For the rest of this example, I'm going to be using ''/dev/sdz'', a fictional drive letter that nobody has, just to prevent bad mistakes from typing in commands blindly.

* Erase your entire USB key.

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdz

Did you use the right drive letter? ''Did you?'' If not, you'll be crying, right about now....

This command will take a while to finish. By writing to every block on the USB key, we are also testing it for bad blocks.

You should get the "no space left on device" error message when it finishes erasing and reaches the end of the drive. Any other error messages might mean bad blocks: if you notice any, your key might be worn out and you'll need to buy another one (cheap keys are notorious for wearing out very quickly).

* Run the mkdiskimage script, to automatically partition and format your USB key.

mkdiskimage -4 /dev/sdz 0 64 32

This lays down a new MBR and partition table on the drive, and partitions and formats the entire drive as one big FAT16 partition. Even though I prefer FAT32, I'm recommending FAT16 here, for increased compatibility with some strange BIOS's.

The mkdiskimage script is USB-ZIP compliant, which may help it boot on more systems than USB-HDD. It's nice that Knoppix now includes this script by default. Here's the webpage for mkdiskimage, for additional reference: http://syslinux.zytor.com/usbkey.php

KDE may throw a stupid popup window in your face, once it recognizes your new partition. If this happens, close the window.

* Run the SYSLINUX installer on your new partition.

syslinux -s /dev/sdz4

This installs the SYSLINUX bootloader onto the newly-created partition, and includes a special file, ldlinux.sys. The -s option is for safety and additional compatibility. Notice the partition is the fourth partition on the drive, not the first. This is for USB-ZIP compliance.

* Mount your new partition.

mount /media/sdz4

Knoppix should have autodetected the new partition and set up a fstab entry for it. The /media/sdz4 directory should now correspond to the /dev/sdz4 partition.

cd /media/sdz4
ls

You should notice one, and only one, file in this directory now: ''ldlinux.sys''

If you don't see this, then something probably went wrong earlier. Go back and try again before continuing.

* Copy the contents of the Knoppix CD's boot directory, onto your USB key.

You should already be in the ''/media/sdz4'' directory, from the cd command above.

cp -av /cdrom/boot/isolinux/* .
mv isolinux.cfg syslinux.cfg
rm -f isolinux.bin

Don't forget the dot on the end. It tells the cp command to copy everything into your current directory, which is what we want. Notice that there is a space between the asterisk and the dot!

Ignore any errors about "failed to preserve ownership". This is normal, because we're using the FAT filesystem, which does not support file ownership. This is not a problem for us.

What we're doing here is copying the Knoppix CD's /boot directory first. This increases reliability, by getting it as close to the beginning of the drive as possible. This should help on systems with buggy CHS handling of USB keys, which may become an issue as new USB keys get larger.

We are renaming Knoppix's isolinux.cfg file to syslinux.cfg, and then removing the unnecessary isolinux.bin file. ISOLINUX (used to boot the CD) and SYSLINUX (what we just installed to your USB key) are really two different variations of the same bootloader program. They accept the same config file format, so we don't need to change anything at all, just rename.

BTW, since ISOLINUX has isolinux.bin as its main program file, can you guess what is the equivalent file for SYSLINUX? If you guessed ldlinux.sys, the file you saw earlier, good job!

* Finish copying the rest of the Knoppix CD.

Again, you should still be in the ''/media/sdz4'' directory. Again, don't forget the dot on the end of this command.

cp -av /cdrom/* .
rm -rf ./boot

This should take a while. We are filling up the USB key with the contents of the Knoppix CD.

We already copied Knoppix's /boot directory earlier, in the previous step. We don't need two copies of it just wasting space, so we remove the extra copy.

* You are now ready to boot!

Cleanly unmount the USB key.

sync
cd /
umount /media/sdz4
sync

Shut down Knoppix, and remove the CD when it tells you to.

* Reset your computer and fiddle with the BIOS until it sees the USB key.

After unmounting above, the USB key can be removed. Some BIOS's require a removal and re-insertion before they will recognize it.

Other things to try, if you're having trouble getting the BIOS to see your USB key and let you boot from it:

# Try a different USB port. Some BIOS's only search a few ports, not all of them. Avoid using a USB hub, if possible.
# Hit a special key to bring up a boot menu. Some BIOS's can only boot from USB when manually selected.
# Go into your BIOS's setup menu, and walk through the boot settings. Look under all menus, especially "hard drives" and "removable devices" and other things like that. Some BIOS's will not search for newly attached devices until you manually go through the menus again.
# Turn your computer completely off and on again. Some BIOS's require you to physically turn the computer off and on again, before they will see newly attached "hard drives".
# If all else fails, try a different PC. It's still fairly rare these days to find a computer that has a good ability to boot from USB devices, and it's not something that motherboard makers advertise, so it takes a bit of luck to find a computer that can do this.

* Boot into Knoppix from your USB key.

The USB key will be slow to load at first, especially during the cheatcode screen, because most BIOS's will default to running USB devices in a very slow mode. Once Knoppix detects and autoconfigures the USB port during booting, though, it will return to normal speed.

If it works, that's great. Notice how much faster it is. There's zero seek time on a USB key, so even though it isn't very fast, it feels a lot faster than the CD. Programs are surprisingly quick to load.

Find the drive letter for your USB key again. It should not change, but it might have.

* Make the USB key writeable.

Knoppix assumes that the "CD-ROM" that it booted from is impossible to write to, but we have a USB key now, not a CD-ROM. So, we must fool Knoppix into letting you write to it.

mount -o remount,rw /cdrom
mount --bind /cdrom /media/sdz4

* Optional step: Modify the Knoppix boot menu

This is an optional step, for customization. We want Knoppix to autofind the persistent home directory (once we make it), and fix a few other things.

vi /media/sdz4/syslinux.cfg

On line 3, the default timeout is 300. Lower this, to around 50 or so (5 seconds, since this counter is in tenths of seconds).

It's nice to have it boot faster, without waiting for you to hit Enter, so you can put in the USB key and walk away, coming back in a few minutes to a fully booted system.

On line 2, add a few more options to the end of the line.

noswap noeject noprompt dma home=scan

Here's a little explanation of what each option does.

; noswap : Security fix: assuming you're going to be using the USB key on a bunch of different computers you don't own, you don't want to be swapping your memory onto their hard drives.
; noeject : You can't physically eject a USB key.
; noprompt : Gets rid of the "remove CD and close drive door" prompt when shutting down, as this prompt is rather misleading when it's really a USB key instead.
; dma : Gets you a significant speed increase when dealing with many IDE drives, a good thing to have.
; home=scan : This will cause Knoppix to pick up your persistent home directory automatically the next time you boot up, asking you for the password as needed. You will get an extra menu during bootup, asking you if you want to mount your home directory or not.

Save the file and quit the editor.

* Optional step: Create a Knoppix persistent home directory

Now, we can run the Knoppix persistent utility, to create something that will save your settings across a reboot.

(It's under the penguin menu, Configure, Create Persistent.)

Choose your drive from the menu that appears, and follow the instructions.

When making your encrypted persistent home directory, choose a size that is a good balance. I recommend not using the entire remaining space on the USB key. It's handy to have some extra free space, for quick file copying and such.

The program should complete without errors. If the program suddenly disappears midway through, check the kernel logs with "dmesg" again. If you see pagefuls of SCSI errors and such, beware, you might have a worn-out USB key!

Now, you should be all set. Reboot again, to make sure it all works.

mkdiskimage won't set up a 2 gb USB device with the USB-ZIP format using the example given. According to other FAQ's this is an issue with too many cylinders. A 1 gb drive is supposed to work fine. You may be able to manually create two drives on the device and manually format it in order to set it up as USB-ZIP.

Depending on the USB device, you can use fdisk to figure out the cylinders, heads and sectors and get mkdiskimage to work with these values. The one I used had 1015 cylinders, 64 heads and 62 sectors per track -- these values worked fine and I was able to create a bootable Knoppix USB key.

process uses the boot.img as the filesystem image of a floppy disk.

This info is given to the mkisofs program during the building of
the iso image for burning to the cdrom. During the boot process,
the boot.img is used as if it were from a floppy drive.

Located on that image is the ldlinux.sys driver which gets executed.

The syslinux.cfg is a text file that is configuration for ldlinux.sys.
It specifies files to display with various key-presses, and kernel
files to load with their parameters such as ramdisk images. At
this point in the booting, a user will have screen with different
boot choices from which to pick.

With the Knoppix cd, when the user picks one of those
choices, either by waiting for the timeout period to expire or by
typing in a selection such as 'knoppix lang=us', the kernel image
and initrd image as specified by that entry in the syslinux.cfg
configuration file, will be loaded into memory and the kernel is
executed. The kernel will use the initrd as the initial root file-
system. This root fs will be the miniroot.gz file on the boot.img
file with Knoppix.

In computing, [[booting]] is a process that starts operating systems when the user turns on a computer system. The origin of the word may be from the wild west in America. The image of a cowboy pulling himself up by his [[booting | bootstraps]] after a long night drinking is the usual idea. If you just need to boot Knoppix on a PC that has no BIOS support for booting from the CD-ROM drive, try Smart Boot Manager. It allows you to install it to a floppy and allow you to select the CD-ROM drive for booting. It works fine on my Toshiba Tecra 740CDT which has no support for booting from the CD-ROM. : The special file /dev/initrd is a read-only block device.
: Device /dev/initrd is a RAM disk that is initialized (e.g.

Installation of older Knoopix to HDD

- Described installation was tried on Dannix (CZ Knoppix) from 3.7. 2003
- Boot Knoppix CD
- Run Root Console
- Use "fdisk" to create two primary partitions. Larger for OS (for example /dev/hda1
as type 83 Linux) and smaller for swap (for example /dev/hda2 as type 82 Linux Swap).
Don't forget to set up bootable attribute "a" to /dev/hda1.
- Run "mke2fs /dev/hda1" for initialization of the device
- Run "mkdir /mnt/hda1" for creation of the mounting point
- Run "mount -t ext2 /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1" for mounting of the device
- Run "cp -a /KNOPPIX/* /mnt/hda1" to copy of needed files
- Run "cp /etc/fstab /mnt/hda1/etc" to copy "fstab" file to new system location
- Run "chroot /mnt/hda1" for moving to interactive shell

- Modify "/etc/init.d/*xsession" file. Find "USER=root" and change it to "USER=%UserName%" (aproximately 5th line), where
%UserName% is the user name of created user.
- Run "visudo" to modify "/etc/sudoers". There you have to find and change "knoppix" to "USER=%UserName%", where
%UserName% is the user name of created user. This change will allow you to run Root Console.
- Reboot Knoppix.

Numerous contributors have suggested numerous methods for accomplishing this, and it is frequently called a "poor man's" install. Recently, Knoppix has undergone some changes, and some of the older methods for accomplishing this are outdated and no longer work with newer versions of Knoppix. Listed below are some other viable methods of running Knoppix from a HD copy of the CD filesystem. In my case, I either store data and programs on a partition of a second hard drive (hdb5), or on a USB key (sda1).

In order to have full functionality, you will want to have a separate partition for your Knoppix program files. The reason is that Knoppix will force read-only status onto the partition containing the active program. So, if you try to save data into same partition as the Knoppix program you are currently running, you won't be able to do it.

2. You need to know how to make a disk writable. All of the devices are write protected by default. Right-click the device, select "properties", go to the third tab, uncheck "read only", click OK, Right-click the device, click "unmount", then double-click the device.

3. You need to learn about using boot codes, or what Knoppix calls "cheatcodes". When you first load your live CD and reboot, a boot screen appears. Note the flashing cursor at the bottom. If you don't enter anything, Knoppix will load with all default conditions after a period of time. Or, you can type in cheatcodes to trigger various options. Here is a list of cheatcodes (don't worry about learning all of them - the ones you need here are explained in [[http://download.linuxtag.org/knoppix/knoppix-cheatcodes.txt this how-to] ]): Cheatcodes are your friends. If you don't like them, you'd better start learning how to write and edit scripts, and possibly remaster linux CDs.

==== Methods: ====

There are several good methods for achieving this. The first two are for versions of how-tos I wrote, but they are not necessarily any better than any others.

1. [[Basic Poor Mans]] This method describes a process using the Knoppix CD as a boot device. If you can load and run off the live CD, and if you can create (or already have) a hard drive partition that is formatted in something other than NTFS, you can use this. It's no frills, but gives good functionality.

2. [[Win Partition]] This method describes a refinement, which eliminates the need for the CD. It uses the GRUB bootloader, but everything is set up from within Windows. So, if you are familiar with Windows, but new to Linux, you can set up and modify everything in a familiar environment. It does require adding one line to your boot.ini file of Windows using Notepad, but as long as you back-up this file first, you should be fine.

3. [[Remaster From Hd Install HowTo]] This article was written by [[Crashed Again]], and provides a good deal more detail about various options in using a PMI.

4. [[Pivot Root Install]] - This is really more of a selectable HD install rather than a PMI (a PMI reads and loads from a compressed disk image or copy, and all changes are made externally), but it does carry some of the advantages and eliminates some of the disadvantages of an HD install. Essentially, you hdinstall to an external device, and boot it with the CD or boot device, rather than an hd installed bootloader. You can modify the installation and avoid bootloader problems.

==== Wrap-up ====

Once you utilize one of these methods, you will have the functionality of a hd linux install available to you. Next time a new version of Knoppix comes out, you can simply save the new version in place of the old one and enjoy the benefits of the latest enhancement, without the hassle of a reinstall, or worrying about dependencies. But what's really cool is that you can go back to Windows whenever you wish simply by leaving the liveCD out when you boot. You never have any danger of messing up Windows, and your Windows-dependent family members and co-workers will appreciate that. Comparisons and relative merits aside, I still have applications I rely upon in Windows, which simply aren't available in Linux.

You may have read about how to dual boot Windows and Linux using a boot loader (e.g., GRUB, LILO, loadlin, etc), and may have even seen people describe these options as "easy". Easy is a relative term, and many of these solutions have merit, but this particular solution is one which will give you full functionality with the Knoppix live CD that you already have. There are no strange applications to Google for or download, you do not have to edit any scripts, and you do not have to use the console. Everything described here can be done from the graphical desktop or the boot prompt, just as with Windows. There may be fancier and more elegant ways to accomplish this, but the point here is to be basic. Having said that, don't get the impression that this isn't powerful. It is. You will be able to perform virtually any task that someone with a hard drive installation can perform, but without a lot of the hassle. Moreover, this type of installation is virtually unbreakable, because the whole system is contained in just one read-only file. So, there is no way to ruin the system configuration. Many experienced linux users use and develop powerful applications with this very setup, not because they don't know how to do it any other way, but because this method provides fewer problems.

==== The tools: ====

If you can load and run the live CD, and if you have some storage option available to you that is not formatted in NTFS (preferably a hard drive partition, but could be a USB stick or some other recognized storage device), you're good to go. This how-to is for Knoppix 3.4 or later.

Be sure to read and understand the introductory information on the WIKI page [[Poor Mans Install]].

==== Steps: ====

* 1. Partition as necessary. My personal recommendation is to partition now, just as you would for a full HD install or dual boot. That way, if or when you decide to make the switch to a HD install, you're halfway there already. Reserve at least a gig for the image partition (I'll call it hdb1), but make it more like 5-10 gig if you eventually want to make it a root partition for a hd install, and if you have room. As long as you are partitioning anyway, reserve 0.5 gig or more for linux swap, and create one or more partitions for data and programs, including the persistent home, however big you need or want (we'll call that hdb5 in the example). You may also want a FAT32 partition for sharing data between linux and Windows. I recommend Qtparted for easy graphical partitioning, which is already on the Knoppix disk. With the more recent versions, you CAN safely repartition an existing NTFS partition. If you want your persistent home (PH) as a partition, the script will format it to ext2 and wipe out everything currently on that partition in the process, so plan for that in advance. You can also save the PH as a file in an existing partition if you prefer.

* 2. Boot the Knoppix CD, using the default configuration, or whatever cheatcodes you're accustomed to using. For example, you might use '''knoppix26''' to load the 2.6 kernel. Find the storage device you want to use (not NTFS), and make it writable (see item #2 in the What You Need to Know section, above).

* 3. Create a persistent home (PH). A persistent home is a location for saving files and programs. Think of it as a combination of "My Documents" and "Program Files" in Windows (in fact, you could create subdirectories with those functions, or even those names, if you want, but let's worry about that later). If you don't want to partition, just save your PH as a file wherever you like. Click the penguin icon on the toolbar, and click Configure. From there, you can see the links to set up a persistent home, and to save your configuration. Do the PH now picking a non-NTFS location if you save it as a file, or picking a partition to be reformatted using ext3 (e.g., I used my whole hdb5 partition, but I could have saved it as a file in that partition if I had existing data, or if I didn't want it reformatted), log off and restart. From now on, you will add a cheatcode to get Knoppix to recognize that home (in my case, '''home=/dev/hdb5''' or '''home=scan''').

* 4. Boot the CD with whatever cheatcodes you used before, but include the following cheatcode as well - I'll use hdb1 as the example for where I want the OS folder located: '''tohd=/dev/hdb1/'''. So, if you created your persistent home at the hdb5 partition, your boot might look like this: '''knoppix26 home=/dev/hdb5 tohd=/dev/hdb1''', or if you saved your PH as a file and didn't partition, it might be: '''knoppix26 home=scan tohd=/dev/hdb1'''. The boot process will copy the image there and continue booting off the CD. Log off and restart.

The boot process should now be a lot faster, and you can remove the CD until the next time you boot. If you haven't already saved your configuration, you can do so now. If you aren't familiar with saving a configuration, basically it allows you to change the default Knoppix configurations that come on the CD, so you can define your printer file, or change the background on your desktop, or add icons, and Knoppix will remember these customizations with each reboot, provided that you add the myconfig cheatcode when you boot.

* 6. Now that you're all set up, you can easily find your saved documents in your home directory. You don't have to remember the details - just click the house icon in Konqueror.

* 7. The easiest way to install programs is by using Klik. Open Konqueror (not Mozilla or any other browser), and type in the following URL: http://klik.berlios.de/ then follow the instructions to install Klik. You will see a number of programs available to you for automatic installation. If you don't see the one you want listed, you can try the following command (still experimental) klik://softwarename into the address block of Konqueror.

Some users are insistent that you should not save your 'personal configuration' data when you also have a persistent home, and that you must deselect it every time you save. I have not found this to be an issue, but I agree that once the PH is set up and the configuration is saved, it is unnecessary to save it in the future. Rather than debate the point, I moved it to the comments. Those who wish to research the issue further can search the forum and come to their own conclusions. Nothing will "explode" if you save the configuration with a PH; so use whatever works for you.(jd)

Some notes:

* I had some problems doing this kind of install and ultimately decided not to use it.
* For laptop users, this won't work if you want to install Knoppix to an external hard drive that you have connected using a PCMCIA card. "tohd" will fail because the partition isn't mountable early on in the boot process. It will only work if you connect the drive to a built-in firewire or USB port. Perhaps Knoppix could load a mini-Linux kernel early on so that we could have a "boot from firewire/usb2 drive" option, see: http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-fireboot.html?ca=dgr-lnxw16FireBoot
* Even after switching to using a built-in firewire connection for my external drive, I got an error that KDE couldn't load because it couldn't write to the partition, even though I made it writeable earlier. This is probably because you can't have knoppix and your persistent home be on the same partition, like a person commented below. So I'll try again using 3 partitions (for swap, home, and knoppix root).
* That worked, but the configuration does not appear to be saved between reboots. If I change the desktop background and reboot, the default one appears again. (NOTE: I think you have to resave your knoppix configuration after changes. I believe this is the way it's meant to work. This will rewrite your knoppix.sh file, if you modified it as per comment below.)
* I tried apt-get to install GNOME and Mono, but got the error "Unable to write to /var/cache/apt/", even when using sudo. So either that is another error that wasn't supposed to happen, or using this [[Poor Mans Install]] you can '''only''' use something like Klik to install software.
* '''Alternative to Poor Man's Install: [[Pivot Root Install]]''' I found instead an alternative way to install Knoppix to an external hard drive that I will try. You do a regular hard-drive install to the external drive (see [[Hd Install HowTo]]), then boot from the CD, and use pivot_root to switch to the hard drive system. So the only disadvantage is that you have to type a some commands each time you boot, but the advantage is you have a full Linux system that you can update however you want. Also using this method I can really use any computer to run my linux system, just by inserting the CD and connecting the external drive.

I had problems with 'Save knoppix configuration' and persistent home directories with this method on an ibm 1300 i series laptop. 
The internal wireless 802.11 would not be detected. I think the problems were related to the pcmcia detection happening twice. 
I now start knoppix with '''knoppix fromhd=/dev/hda6 home=/dev/hda2/knoppix.img myconfig=/dev/hda2 nopcmcia nodhcp ...''' 
AND using a slighly edited /dev/hda2/knoppix.sh file. I just changed the last lines to:

- Some of the problems occurred while figuring out how to configure lilo so I could boot this from the hd. So I wasn't always booting from the cd.

Anyhow, config and home dir on hard drive and 802.11 work solid for me now.

Maybe its obvious but the partition named in tohd= must be formatted as a ext filesystem (mkfs.ext /dev/hdaX) If you don't you get a confusing error about the paritions size being too small. --[[Thomas Rynne]]
