A: Mehrere Möglichkeiten:

b) Bei http://www.liniso.de/ und anderen unter http://www.knoppix.de/ ge-
listeten Versanddiensten können Sie die jeweils neuste CD bestellen und
sich zusenden lassen.

F: Wie brenne ich eine bootfähige CD unter Windows?

A: Eigentlich gehört diese Frage nicht in eine KNOPPIX-FAQ, leider wird sie
dennoch häufig gestellt. Generell hängt dies natürlich vom verwendeten
Programm ab, wobei alle gängigen Brennprogramme diese Option unterstützen,
man muss sie nur finden!
Unter der Adresse http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/docs/ und auf den
Knoppix-Mirrors im gleichnamigen Verzeichnis finden Sie einige beispielhafte
Anleitungen von Anwendern, die diese Schritte in einer Kurzdoku festgehalten
haben.

F: Warum ist mein Lieblings-Programm xyz nicht auf der CD? Kann man es
nicht in zukünftigen Download-Versionen hinzufügen? Es ist kostenlos!

A: Abgesehen davon, dass der Platz natürlich auch auf einem 700-MB Rohling
begrenzt ist, und DVD-Brenner für größere Images noch nicht sehr verbreitet
sind, spielt bei der Akzeptanz von Software für KNOPPIX die vom
Hersteller/Urheber angegebene Lizenz eine große Rolle - unabhängig vom
Preis! Lizenzen, die das gebührenfreie Kopieren, Modifizieren und die
Weitergabe der CD an sich einschränken, werden von uns zumindest für die
frei verteilbaren KNOPPIX-Versionen nicht akzeptiert. Darunter fallen auch
Lizenzen, die den Benutzer dazu zwingen würden, vor dem Download weitere
Agreements zu unterschreiben oder Lizenzkosten zu entrichten, und solche
die die kommerzielle Weitergabe (also z.B. auch das Anpassen, Kopieren und
Versenden der CD gegen Erstattung der Arbeitskosten) verbieten. Fast alle
Programme auf der Download-Version unterliegen der GPL oder ähnlichen
OpenSource-Lizenzen, die dem Empfänger viele Freiheiten bieten (s.a.
http://www.gnu.de/gpl-ger.html). Tolerierte Ausnahmen bilden solche
Programmpakete, die zwar auf Herstellerwunsch nur in Binärform verbreitet
werden dürfen, für die der Verwertungsrechte-Inhaber aber eine liberale
Lizenz vorgesehen hat, die die nichtkommerzielle sowie kommerzielle
Weitergabe explizit und ohne große Einschränkungen gestattet.
Bitte überprüfen Sie die jeweiligen Lizenzen Ihrer Software genau, bevor
Sie dem Entwickler-Team vorschlagen, dass diese in zukünftigen Versionen
von KNOPPIX berücksichtigt werden.

F: Mein Rechner bootet nicht von CD. Was kann ich tun?

A: Schauen Sie zunächst im BIOS Ihres Rechners nach, ob dieser so eingestellt
ist, dass er von CD bootet (bei den meisten Rechnern drücken Sie dazu während
des RAM-Zählens auf die "Entfernen"-Taste. Falls dies der Fall ist, kann Ihr
Rechner vielleicht mit dem verwendeten CD-Rohling nichts anfangen (einige
Notebooks haben z.B. Probleme mit schwarz beschichteten Rohlingen).
Manche Rechner erkennen die Änderung im BIOS auch erst nach einem Hardreset
an. Wenn Ihr Rechner die Option, von CD zu booten, gar nicht unterstützt,
können Sie eine Bootdiskette mit Hilfe des Programms "mkbootfloppy"
erstellen.

F: Ich habe mir KNOPPIX über WWW/FTP downgeloadet oder eine Download-Version
von einem Freund bekommen. Es bootet auf meinem PC, aber nach einiger Zeit
bricht es den Startvorgang ab oder es ist nur das Hintergrundbild zu sehen
und es passiert nichts mehr. Was ist los?

A: Ihre Download-Version ist vermutlich nicht vollständig, oder der Download
ist (unbemerkt) abgebrochen. Das ISO-Image ist in diesem Fall defekt, und
auf die Daten im Fehlenden Bereich kann nicht zugegriffen werden (was man
manchmal sogar durch die Geräusche, die das CD-Rom-Laufwerk bei wiederholten
Leseversuchen macht, "hören" kann). Das Fatale dabei ist, dass das
Inhaltsverzeichnis auf der CD, das ganz am Anfang liegt, i.d.R. vollständig
ist, d.h. Sie können sich das Inhaltsverzeichnis der CD ohne Fehler ansehen.
Nur ist eben das Lesen der Dateien im fehlenden Bereich nicht möglich (d.h.
der Zugriff auf diese schlägt fehl.). Eine mögliche Abhilfe steht in der
Antwort zu "Was sind MD5-Dateien?" und "Wie bekomme ich die CD?".

F: Was sind diese komischen MD5-Dateien, die bei den ISO-CD-Images dabei
sind?

A: Die Dateien mit Endung .md5 enthalten Prüfsummen für die eigentlichen
CD-Images. Eine Prüfsumme ist eine genau auf die zu prüfende Datei
"passende Zahl", mit der man verifizieren kann, ob der Inhalt der Datei
bis ins kleinste Detail mit der Original-Datei übereinstimmt. Wenn Sie
sich sowohl das ISO-Image der CD als auch die dazu gehörende .md5-Datei
downloaden, können Sie unter Linux/Unix mit "md5sum -c dateiname.md5"
überprüfen, ob Ihr Download erfolgreich war und alle Inhalte komplett
und unverändert sind. Weitere Informationen über MD5 und Programme für
verschiedene Betriebssysteme sind unter http://www.fourmilab.ch/md5/
zu finden. Eine Windows(TM)-Version können Sie unter
http://www.toast442.org/md5gui.shtml downloaden.

F: Wie kann ich meinen Drucker einstellen?

A: "Drucker konfigurieren" im Menü "Knoppix" anklicken, und den Wizard
zur Einstellung verwenden.

F: Wie lautet das root-Passwort?

A: Es gibt keines, alle Passwörter sind per default gesperrt.
Unter KNOPPIX/README_Security.txt sind einige Hinweise zu diesem Thema
nachzulesen.

F: Ich sehe die Partitionen meiner Festplatte auf dem Desktop, und kann
durch Draufklicken auch auf die Inhalte zugreifen, beim Schreiben bekomme
ich aber immer "keine Berechtigung" als Fehlermeldung. Wie kann ich auf
meine vorhandenen Partitionen schreiben?

A: Die generelle Philosophie der KNOPPIX ist es, so wenig wie möglich
Schreibzugriffe zu erlauben, daher werden die vorhandenen Partitionen
wenn überhaupt, nur "read-only" eingebunden. Wenn mit der rechten
Maustaste auf das jeweilige Icon geklickt wird, lässt sich jedoch unter
"Gerät" das "read-only" wegklicken. Anschließend lässt sich die jeweilige
Partition dann "read-write" einbinden (evtl. bei bereits eingebundenen
Partitionen vorher noch mal auf "Aushängen" klicken!).
ACHTUNG: Beim Schreiben auf NTFS-Partitionen kann es zu Datenverlusten
kommen, da dieses Dateisystem von Linux kaum unterstützt wird!
DOS/FAT32-Dateisysteme sind jedoch im Schreibzugriff unkritisch.

Tipp:
In der Shell funktioniert das "schreibbar machen" von bereits
eingebundenen Partitionen mit "mount -o remount,rw /mnt/partitionsname".

F: Mein "anderes" Betriebssystem meldet, nachdem ich die KNOPPIX benutzt
habe, plötzlich kurz nach dem Start in einem blauen Bildschirm "File
kernel.exe not found or defective" und "reinstall...".

A: Nehmen Sie einfach die KNOPPIX-CD aus dem CD-Rom Laufwerk und starten
Sie den Rechner neu.

F: Auf meinem Rechner funktioniert die Autokonfiguration nicht, oder
der Rechner bleibt beim Booten ganz stehen. Was kann ich tun?

A: Vielleicht klappt es, wenn Teile der Autokonfiguration übersprungen
werden. Mit "knoppix noscsi" oder "knoppix nopcmcia" kann dies angegeben
werden. Falls der Fehler identifiziert werden kann -> Bitte eine
genaue Fehlermeldung und, wenn möglich, einen Lösungsvorschlag über
das Kontaktformular http://www.knopper.net/kontakt/ schicken!
Die Ausgabe von "lspci ; lspci -n" ist auch manchmal sehr hilfreich,
besonders, wenn es um nicht korrekt erkannte Grafikkarten geht.

F: Meine Grafikkarte funktioniert nicht!

A: Bei sehr neuen (oder exotischen) Grafikkarten kann es sein, dass
diese noch nicht in der Hardwaredatenbank vorhanden sind. Meistens
funktionieren sie aber doch unter Linux! Wenn im Anfangs-Bootbildschirm
knoppix xmodule=vesa
oder
knoppix xmodule=fbdev
eingegeben wird, kann evtl. mit den nicht-beschleunigten XFree86-Modi
ein brauchbares Bild erzeugt werden. Ab Version 31-01-2002 gibt
es (speziell für ältere Notebooks) auch die Framebuffer-Bootoption
fb800x600
(anstelle von knoppix anzugeben), mit welcher eine Auflösung von
800x600 Bildpunkten im Framebuffer-Modus verwendet wird. Egal, ob es
mit diesen Tricks nun funktioniert oder nicht, eine Unterstützung in
der nächsten KNOPPIX-Version kann schneller eingebaut werden, wenn
(wie bei der vorigen Frage angegeben) die PCI-Nummern der Grafikkarte
mit Beschreibung per Mail an uns übermittelt werden ("lspci ; lspci -n").

F: Meine PS/2-Maus geht nicht!

A: Wenn der Mauszeiger in der graphischen Benutzeroberfläche wild
durch die Gegend springt, benutzt die angeschlossene Maus ein
exotisches Protokoll. In diesem Fall hilft nur das Booten im
"expert"- Modus und das Einstellen des passenden Protokolls
fur das XFree-System. Wenn der Mauszeiger jedoch in der Mitte
des Bildschirms völlig still verharrt und nicht auf Mausbewegungen
reagiert, haben Sie vielleicht ein Board mit einem bekannten
BIOS-Fehler erwischt (v.a. bei Notebooks kommt dies in letzter
Zeit gehäuft vor). Versuchen Sie, ob
knoppix pci=irqmask=0x0e98
im Bootscreen eingegeben hilft. Alternativ sollten Sie ein
BIOS-Update Ihres Rechners in Betracht ziehen (Garantiefall?).

F: Wie bekomme ich Unterstützung für mein Mausrad?

A: Beim Booten
knoppix wheelmouse
eingeben. Leider lassen sich Mausräder nicht automatisch erkennen,
und die von Nicht-Radmäusen verwendeten Protokolle sind meistens
mit denen von Radmäusen inkompatibel, daher ist die "sichere"
Default-Einstellung die ohne Mausrad-Unterstützung.

F: Mein Hauptspeicher wird nicht vollständig erkannt, oder
der Rechner bleibt ziemlich am Anfang mit "Panic: cannot
mount root file system" stehen!

A: Einige Boards geben die Größe des verfügbaren Speichers
anscheinend nicht korrekt an den Linux-Kernel weiter.
Abhilfe: Als zusätzliche "knoppix"-Bootoption die Speichergröße
in MB (!) angeben, z.B. 128 Megabyte mit
knoppix mem=128M
(Achtung: unbedingt großes M hinter der Speichergröße verwenden!)

Knoppix liefert natürlich auch eine eigene FAQ mit. Diese befindet sich im KNOPPIX Verzeichnis auf der KNOPPIX CD unter dem Namen "KNOPPIX-FAQ.txt" (KNOPPIX-FAQ-EN.txt" für die Englische Version).

1.) Reported by: KK

The knoppix-terminalserver script does not setup the initrd correctly because ld-linux.so.2 is skipped when parsing the ldd output. Therefore, neither pump nor ifconfig can start when booting the terminalserver client.

Solution: Prior to starting the terminalserver, do a

The automatically generated desktop icons for harddisks are named "Festplatte" in all languages. Sorry, I screwed up here when shortening the hd icon label in order to display the real device name.

/usr/bin/cdrecord, /usr/bin/cdrdao, /usr/bin/cdda2wav and /usr/bin/cdparanoia have wrong (missing) group execute permissions.

Solution: Before using any of these programs or running k3b, do a

OpenOffice does not open existing documents. May be related to bug #18 in V3.9-2005-05-27. See possible fix there. (Also, new Openoffice 2.0 filename extensions are not automatically recognized.)

Mouse is now dead when using KVM (Keyboard/Video/Mouse) switch; directly plugging in a mouse works. KVM switch still works transparently for V3.8.2,V3.9,V4.0DVDLinuxtag.

unionfs is broken again, but not as heavily as in 3.9. If you install certain packages with dpkg or apt-get, a kernel oops can happen, though it doesn't freeze the system. This is quite bad for people (like me) who like to test-install new software on the live system, so because of this (and the prior reported bugs) there will be a hotfix of the 4.0.2 DVD soon (probably even before I get a chance to finish the CD).

1.)
The Knoppix V4.0 DVD did not boot and hung. In debug mode i found that there were ACPI warnings "executable code found at module level". The solution to this was to remove the USB card reader I had plugged in. After that the boot sequence finished ok. I do not know if this error is worth being tracked. I cannot really make a connection between ACPI and a USB device. If anyone is interested in the issue I will send additional data.

- I had a similar problem. Used the "nousb" option - booted fine.

- I think that this may be a local/BIOS problem specific to a board. Have you tried "knoppix acpi=off noapic pnpbios=off pci=bios" to change the way the BIOS allocates interrupts between devices? -KK

2.)
Knoppix needs a povray raytracing engine if it is to have KPovModeller. Here is the error:

i) Load up Graphics--> KPovModeller.
ii) (It comes up with a basic scene).
iii) Hit View--> Render
iv) It gives the error message: "Couldn't call povray. Please check your installation or set another povray command."

A discussion of possible workarounds (including my wishlist) can be found at: http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=88147#88147 . I would note that I entered it into a feature request at that forum and was directed to report this as a bug. Paipix 3.6 FWIW does not give this error because it has a povray engine. (submitted by PterandoN, pterandon)

- Problem: povray is NOT FREE SOFTWARE. The license is incompatible with a free distribution for any purpose, including commercial ones. So, I'd rather remove kmovmodeler in 4.0.1. Sorry. -KK

I'm afraid you're mistaken. Povray is FREEWARE. I've had a member of POV-Team assert that its license is fine for distribution like Knoppix. It is already distributed on:

i) klik (http://klik.atekon.de/index.php?section=graphics/ )
ii) mediainlinux (http://www.mediainlinux.org/index.php/mediainlinux/news/release_news/mediainlinux_3_beta_version_release_notes)
and
iii) Paipix (If you invoke the "Render" on kpovmodeller, it invokes povray application.
iv) eduknoppix (http://eduknoppix.dmf.unicatt.it/) as far as I can see.

Sorry, "Freeware" does not make it "free software". Read http://www.povray.org/povlegal.html thoroughly. You may NOT distribute povray commercially without restrictions, therefore a computer magazine, for example, could NOT include a Knoppix CD anymore if povray is in it, unless the magazine gets a written permission from the povray legal owners. Also, each and every redistributor pf a Knoppix with povray needs to also accept the quite complex povray REDISTRIBUTION license at http://www.povray.org/distribution-license.html. Sorry, at this point, I really think it gets inacceptable. If the povray authors would agree to distribute povray under an OSI-approved license (http://www.opensource.org/) instead of the current one, I see no problem for the inclusion in Knoppix. -KK

Knoppix 4.0 booted from DVD:

- No sound. When I go to "Kontrollsystem - Soundsystem aktivieren" I get the message: Error while initializing the sound driver, device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device). The sound driver doesn't seem to be installed. It's a Soundblaster AWE 64 Gold, with Knoppix 3.4 it works.

- Could you let me know which soundcard (PCI vendor and version ID) and which module has worked for your card in 3.4? Also, I would recommend booting with the options mentioned under 1.) -KK

- Can't edit Grub bootloader with the system tool "Systemstart". The Bootloader can't be found.

Knoppix 4.0 installed on hard drive:

- No sound. Same problem as above.

- Now the Grub bootloader is found, but the entry of Windows XP starting isn't displayed. Changes doesn't affect anything, either.

- Open Office 2.0 doesn't start (Knoppix' size is only 6 GB on my hard drive, I thought it should be around 10 GB. Perhaps some files are missing.).

- Looks like /KNOPPIX was copied to harddisk, which doesn't contain /opt/openoffice. The installer should have used /UNIONFS as source instead. Easy fix: Boot the DVD, mount your install partition at /mnt/hd, and then do a "cp -a /KNOPPIX2/* /mnt/hd/" as root. -KK

- No USB hard drives are getting detected.

- Works for me.

Perhaps you can fix some of these problems by hand, but it will be nice, if it works out of the box. I know, that Knoppix isn't made for installing on hard drive, but many people do so and perhaps it is not so much work to fix the problems.

4.) desktop=openbox at boot doesn't work (standard KDE comes up). The openbox option in the restart X program does work.

- Problem with knoppix-autoconfig, which did not have openbox in the list of "syntactically correct" desktop variants. Line removed in 4.0.1. -KK

Confirmed. Note that apt-get update; apt-get upgrade gets partially through an install before freezing, not all packages trigger this bug.

This seems to be related to the unionfs snapshot from 26.5.05, and links in the menu structure when calling "update-menus". The latest snapshot still has this bug. 2.) The "ub" kernel module is still compiled into the kernel. This prevents Knoppix from booting on USB CD/DVD-ROMs. <a href="http://linux.usc.edu/pipermail/usclug-chat/2004-December/000111.html">This has been known since Linux 2.6.9</a>. --[[User:PopeFelix|PopeFelix]] 16:29, 4 Jun 2005 (GMT)

Actually, this isn't the case. Knoppix 3.9 seems to boot well on all USB DVD-Writers, CD-Roms etc. On which external USB drive did that problem occur? --[[User:KlausKnopper|KlausKnopper]] Sun Jun 12 23:41:14 CEST 2005

3.) Please config out CONFIG_BLK_DEV_UB (the ub driver). This driver has the bizzare side effect of stopping the usb-storage driver from ever seeing a USB device, irrespective of whether the ub module is loaded or not. As PopeFelix noted, this stops knoppix being able to use USB CD/DVD drives. One reason I have switched to kanotix is that absence of the ub driver.

This seems to be related to the unionfs snapshot from 26.5.05, and links in the menu structure when calling "update-menus". The latest snapshot still has this bug. Until there is a solution for this, we are reverting to unionfs 1.0.11.

Actually, this isn't the case. Knoppix 3.9 seems to boot well on all USB DVD-Writers, CD-Roms etc.

3.) Please config out CONFIG_BLK_DEV_UB (the ub driver). This driver has the bizzare side effect of stopping the usb-storage driver from ever seeing a USB device, irrespective of whether the ub module is loaded or not. As PopeFelix noted, this stops knoppix being able to use USB CD/DVD drives. One reason I have switched to kanotix is that absence of the ub driver.

Also, this seems to work here: ub for USB flash memory and usb-storage for writers.
